Which Dog Breeds Need the Longest Dog Walks?

All dogs need daily physical and mental stimulation to stay happy and healthy. However, some pups need more exercise than others, not only for their health but also to prevent them from getting bored. Boredom might not sound very serious, but it can lead to poor health, obesity, depression, and behavioral issues in canines. To keep your furry friend from getting bored and keeping them happy and healthy in effect, here are some breeds that you’ll need to help get some extra exercise.

German Shepherds

Known for their strength, intelligence, obedience, and being easy to train, it shouldn’t come as a huge shock that German Shepherds need a significant amount of exercise. These canines were originally bred to be herding dogs and need 2 hours of exercise a day to stay healthy. To help reduce boredom, these working dogs must have enough mental and physical stimulation.

Labrador Retriever

The Labrador Retriever is one of the most popular breeds in the U.S. and was originally bred to be a working dog that would spend all day outside helping out. Additionally, Labradors are prone to joint and muscle problems due to their heavier size. If left idle for long periods of time, there can be a significant impact made on their joints. This impact can lead to hip dysplasia, joint disease, and muscular dystrophy. It’s also crucial to keep in mind that Labradors are more likely to become obese due to their genes. So, with all of this in mind, your Labrador must be getting about 2 hours of exercise a day. But since the breed is energetic in nature – this shouldn’t be a problem.

English Spaniel

In the Spaniel breed family, the English Spaniel is known as a gun dog, primarily used for flushing out and catching game. While the English Spaniel may not be as large as some other canines, they still need a significant amount of mental and physical stimulation. Being an excitable and hire spirited pup, they need about two hours of exercise each day.

Hungarian Vizsla

The Hungarian Vizsla is a loyal, affectionate, and regal pooch that is full of energy. Going on walks with your Hungarian Vizsla for about two hours a day will help keep them both mentally and physically stimulated. During these walks, they’ll be able to take in all the smells along your route which is great considering their excellent sense of smell and curious mind. These canines thrive off of exercise and are excellent swimmers, too. So, definitely take advantage of this and allow them to take a dip in some water whenever you can.

Dalmatian

Once known for running alongside carriages, Dalmatians are also known as carriage dogs. Full of energy, these pups are excellent at running long distances. Thankfully, you don’t need a carriage to get your Dalmatian to exercise. Instead, a couple of hours of walking a day should keep these pups strong and healthy.

All of these breeds are full of energy and love to be stimulated. It won’t take much to get these pups out the door and exercising. So, take advantage of that, giving them the exercise they need to help keep them healthy.
