National Black Dog Day Ice Cream Social

National Black Dog Day Ice Cream Social

Does your pup love yummy dog-friendly sundaes? And do you love supporting other canines in need? Well then mark your calendars for National Black Dog Day Ice Cream Social on September 28th!

What is National Black Dog Day?

National Black Dog Day brings attention to Black Dogs and how they have the lowest chance of adoption if they ever are at all – and this is called Black Dog Syndrome. In fact, sadly 2/3 of all black dogs that enter a shelter are euthanized. There are many reasons for this, but here are a few:

  • Black dogs are difficult to see in their crates at shelters
  • Black dogs don’t photograph as well as lighter coated dogs, making them less appealing to viewers online
  • Many people assume dark-coated breeds to be aggressive and dangerous even though it has nothing to do with their breed or temperament
  • It’s harder to read the facial expressions of a dog with a darker coat, making some people anxious around them
  • The color black is often associated with bad luck and misfortune

In support of the effort to bring more love and happy homes to out black canine companions, Charlotte Black Dogs nonprofit was created in 2013. And one event they’re holding this year is a fun Ice Cream Social in support of National Black Dog Day!

What to Expect

Dogs of all coat colors are welcome to the Ice Cream Social, where they’ll receive FREE dog-friendly sundaes. On top of that, there will be some beautiful and sweet black dogs available for adoption from Rover’s Rescue & Retreat. Pet Education Assistance & Resources along with Pet in the City, will also be giving out FREE samples of dog-related goodies.
